On behalf of LAFA, I would like to welcome you and your child to the Pee Wee division. My name is Mark Yoder and I am the Director for the division.
Please take a few moments to read through this entire email as there are a number of important pieces of information I want to share with you. The Pee Wee division is focused on being a safe and fun introduction to tackle football. The division consists of 7 and 8 year olds with importance placed on teaching the fundamentals of the game, keeping safety a top priority and ensuring players have fun. Our emphasis is more on teaching and much less on wins and losses. We make every effort to make the teams fair and balanced. We have a 6 game season with no playoffs or championship.
LAFA has kept registration open, so if you know of anyone who is considering football please encourage them to sign up.
LAFA is excited to inform you of a new format for the 2019 season. LAFA has partnered with USA Football to bring a Rookie Tackle Football program to our system.
Here are some of the advantages of the Rookie Tackle Football program:
1. All participants learn to play all positions and learn all football skills that are required by the game.
2. Maximizing player enjoyment and skill development.
3. Ensuring all players have meaningful playing time and the opportunity for improvement and success.
4. Providing a bridge between flag football and the 11-player, full-field tackle version.
5. Encouraging a fast-paced game with more plays, greater activity and the promotion of fun.
6. Emphasizing fundamental skill development by isolating situations for players to showcase their abilities via formation regulations and limited field size.
7. Limiting roster sizes to foster participation and provide more focused, individualized coaching attention during practice and on game day
This new program will not affect the game, playing time, or the ability to give breaks to the kids. Your head coach will communicate to you how this will look on the field.
Leading up to and through the evaluation practices, communication will come through me. Once teams are selected (after September 6th), your head coach and assistant coaches will be your primary point of contact. However, you can always feel free to reach out to me with questions or comments.
Here are a few key dates in the coming weeks and a few other important pieces of information:
Equipment Handouts – Monday, August 26th – 6pm – 7pm, Green Field (Franklin Street, West Chester, PA)
Each player will receive the following equipment– shoulder pads, practice pants and practice jersey. Helmets and mouth guards MUST be purchased by each player. Helmets, mouthpieces and other equipment can be purchased at Dick’s Sporting Goods or Modell’s Sports.
Evaluation Practice – Wednesday, August 28th, Tuesday, September 3rd and Thursday, September 5th – 6pm – 7:30pm, Kelly Field (Westtown Rd, West Chester, PA)
We established the Evaluation Practices several years ago as a way for all players (new and returning) to get acclimated and prepared for the upcoming season. The evaluation practices are setup in a stations format focused on – Stance, Blocking, Tackling, Ball Skills and Agility. We also use this time to evaluate players as a means to understand where their skills are today. This understanding helps the coaches ensure teams are balanced from an age and skill level perspective.
- For the 1st two (2) practices (August 28th and September 3rd), players will need – Helmets, Mouth Guards, Practice Jersey, Cleats and Water.
- For the 3rd practice (September 5th) players will need full equipment – Helmets, Mouth Guards, Cleats, Shoulder Pads, Practice Jersey, Practice Pants w/Pads and Water.
We divide up players for the evaluation practices evenly so all players are evaluated fairly.
Player Draft – Thursday, September 6th
The head coaches of each team will get together on September 6th to conduct the draft. As stated above, we use the information we gather from the Evaluation Practices to make teams as fair and balanced as possible. Players who played in the Pee Wee division last season will return to their team, unless they have requested to be moved to a different team. We do NOT assign players to specific teams or with other specified players, so we can ensure teams are fair & balanced.
Once players are selected, they will be notified by their head coach (via Team Snap). Practice with your team will begin on Saturday, September 8th. Times to be determined.
All practices and games will be at Kelly Field. Game schedules will be distributed in the coming weeks.
I know a number of father’s have expressed an interest in coaching. We need two (2) more head coaches and a few assistant coaches, please contact me if interested. All coaches and volunteers for LAFA must go through a clearance process including a background check. The details of the process are noted on the LAFA Volunteers under the Volunteers tab. No parent is permitted on the field (practice or games) unless they have completed all the necessary clearances. If you are interested in being an assistant coach (and we could always use more help), please start the clearance process as soon as possible.
There is a lot of information here. If you have questions, please feel free to reach out to me. It may take me a day or so to respond, but I will get back to you.
Thank you and I am looking forward to a great season!
